Retired Army Chief Generat Bipin Rawat was set to retire from him current post today. He served as the 27th Chief of Army Staff for the Indian Army, which is the highest ranking position in the force.
General Bipin Rawat assumed the position of Army Chief on September 27, 2016 and served for over three years.
On December 30, 2019, which was one day before his retirement, he was given the position of Chief of Defence Staff. As the CDS, he will be a looking over all three of the Indian military forces and act as a single point military advisor for the government.

General Rawat was born in Pauri, Uttarakhand on March 16, 1958.
He attended the Cambrian Hall School, Dehradun and St. Edwards School, Shimla. He later attended the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla.
He went on to attent the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun where he was awarded the 'Sword of Honour'.
Following his father's footsteps, General Rawat rose to the highest rank in the Indian Army. His father, Lt General Lakshman Singh Rawat, retired as the Vice Chief of Army Staff in 1988.
General Bipin Rawat was awarded a Doctorate of Philosophy by Chaudary Charan Singh University, Meerut for his research on military media strategic studies.
He was awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal and Uttam Yudh Seva Medal for his exceptional services in the Indian Army.
General Rawat has been a part of many international bilateral visits to places such as Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Russia and the United States.
He is also an honorary General in the Nepaliese Army.
General Rawat miracalously survived a single engine helicopter crash in 2015, minutes after it took off from Nagaland.
A day before his retirement, General Bipin Rawat accepted the position of Chief of Defence Staff. His duty will be to overlook the Indian armed forces and act as a military advisor for the government.
